In Memory of Essie Whitelaw:
A Trailblazer, Mentor and Champion for Wisconsin Women
Honoring Essie
The Wisconsin Women’s Health Foundation mourns the loss of our board chair, Essie Whitelaw, who passed away on August 23, 2026, at the age of 78.
Essie joined the Foundation’s board in 1998 and had dedicated an extraordinary 28 years of service to our organization, most recently as board chair. Her wisdom, leadership and unwavering commitment helped guide WWHF through nearly three decades of growth in service to Wisconsin women and families.

“I am deeply grateful to have known Essie,” shared Tommi Thompson, WWHF’s executive director. “Since joining our board in 1998, she played a significant role in helping shape the Foundation into what it is today. I am deeply saddened that we have to say goodbye. She was a remarkable woman and will be greatly missed by all of us.”

A Trailblazing Career
Essie was a trailblazer and mentor to many throughout her professional life. She served more than 15 years in executive leadership at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Wisconsin, including as President and Chief Operating Officer from 1992 to 1997 and Vice President of National Business Development. She later served as Senior Vice President of Operations at Wisconsin Physician Services from 2001 until her retirement in 2010.
A Life of Service
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Essie gave generously of her time and resources across her community. In addition to WWHF, her board service included Network Health, Kingdom Prep Lutheran School, the Milwaukee Public Museum, Goodwill Industries, United Way of Greater Milwaukee, the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce, the Greater Milwaukee Committee, and many others.

Essie’s faith was central to who she was, and she remained a faithful presence in her church and community throughout her life.
Remembering Essie
Essie leaves behind a lasting legacy, both in corporate and civic life and in the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside her. Her decades of service to WWHF, and to the countless organizations and communities she touched, reflect a life devoted to lifting others up.
We extend our deepest condolences to Essie’s family and all who loved her. Her legacy will continue to guide WWHF’s mission for years to come.
