Event Date: October 10, 2018
What a great event! It is always so refreshing and such a great reminder that questions and real conversation are not only important, but imperative to healthy living. We hope you have been able to apply some of the take-home tips both Dr. Skeer & Special Agent Ryan gave us last Thursday. If you need a refresher on some of the key takeaways, we’re here for you!
Dr. Margie Skeer discussed Classic Parenting Styles, which work (Authoritative) & which do NOT (Authoritarian).
Authoritative: High Expectations & Control with High Warmth & Sensitivity
Authoritarian: High Expectations & Control with Low Warmth & Sensitivity
These tough conversations shouldn’t be a one-time thing. Keep them going! Dr. Skeer used the example of teaching our kids, how to drive… we’re instilling a skill into our children so we need to treat it as such. We’ve linked the websites that she mentioned to use as tools for these talks:

Special Agent Heather Ryan Shared the Manipulation Process used by “bad guys” to target our kids:
Bad Guys visit website-> ID’s & Makes Contact with Child -> Befriends, Establishes Trust -> Makes Request -> Makes Demands -> Victimization
Helpful Tips from Heather
> Set accounts to private when you can, turn off location services, block strangers <
> Use computers parental controls to restrict explicit media <
> Set up restrictions on every browser on ALL phones & computers <
> Create a common space for devices <
> Learn/explore social media apps they use <
> Research Common Sense Media <
> Set up different login accounts for adults/kids <
(kids accounts can be restricted to one browser and a specific number of apps!)
Heather encouraged us to focus on whichever resources work for us individually. She personally loves Common Sense Media.
Remember: the “bad guys” are often people we like, love, live with or live by & don’t forget, INTUITION IS IMPORTANT. View fear as a gift, we have it to keep us safe!
