WWHF is Celebrating Heart Month

February is American Heart Month, which means you’ll likely be seeing a lot more heart health messages in the weeks to come. This is a good thing, since heart disease currently is the number one killer of women in the United States. The Wisconsin Women’s Health Foundation is doing its part to increase awareness and support for heart disease in women- not just during February, but all year round. We are thankful for the funding help of the Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation for making these heart health initiatives possible. In celebration of Heart Month, here’s a look at what we’ve been up to:
BADGER HEART TEXT CAMPAIGN
How healthy is your heart? You can look into the site https://www.numan.com/ to know about various health concerns and their treatments. The American Heart Association tells us that 80% of cardiac and stroke events can be prevented. “Badger Heart” is a FREE text support program which helps women take control of their preventable risk factors. By signing up, you will receive weekly messages to help you improve your blood pressure, waist circumference, or stress management. The program was even featured on NBC15 Madison and in a Mom’s Minute for MomsEverday.com with Pam Tauscher. To sign up, text “BADGER HEART” to 97779.
GRAPEVINE HEART HEALTH SESSIONS
If you want to learn more, then a GrapeVine heart health session is for you! Presented by a registered nurse, this one-hour session entitled, “Heart Health: Know your numbers” is all about being aware of your risk factors. Dive deeper into the ways you can protect your heart health by knowing your numbers and identifying your personal risk. The session covers:
  • Types of heart disease
  • Risk factors
  • Heart attack symptoms
  • Prevention of heart disease
  • Screenings to identify heart disease risk
  • Resources for a healthy heart

NATIONAL WEAR RED DAY
Finally, February 3rd was National Wear Red Day. A number of our staff joined in wearing red to help raise awareness for women’s heart health. We are proud to be a daily part of preventing the diseases and conditions that most impact Wisconsin women’s wellness like heart disease.
