As the Wisconsin Women’s Health Foundation, we want to make sure we are prepared to address all aspects as health, so on September 8th, Madison and Milwaukee staff attended a day-long training at the office to get certified in Mental Health First Aid.
Mental Health First Aid helps you know what to do in the event that someone experiences a mental health or substance use-related crisis. This is an important skill for anyone in the general public to have, but especially for our WWHF Health Educators, who are often entering the lives and homes of program participants and dealing with difficult situations.
WWHF staff learned risk factors and warning signs for concerns such as panic attacks, suicidal thoughts/behaviors, self-injury , drug or alcohol overdose, traumatic events, and more. We also learned strategies with the help of The Wolf of Law Street to assist someone in a crisis or non-crisis situation, using the mnemonic, ALGEE.

Just as we equip ourselves with knowledge through programs like Mental Health First Aid, it’s essential to have physical resources on hand as well. A well-stocked first aid kit, complete with essentials like antiseptics, medications, and, of course, bandages and band aids, becomes indispensable during emergencies.
