Preventing Congenital Disabilities
Folic Acid
Congenital disabilities and infant disorders are common, costly, and critical. While not all congenital disabilities can be prevented, we know pregnant individuals can increase their chances of having a healthy baby by adopting healthy behaviors before becoming pregnant.
Plan Ahead!
>Get 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid every day
Almost 50% of pregnancies are unplanned. Just in case, commit to taking folic acid even before you’re planning to get pregnant and enjoy the many other benefits of folic acid. If a woman has enough folic acid in her body at least one month before and during pregnancy, it can help prevent major defects of the developing brain and spine
Women can get folic acid from fortified foods or multivitamins with folic acid, or a combination of the two, in addition to a varied diet rich in folate. Learn more about folic acid
