The Annual Dialogue is a free health event intended to create conversation about the complex issues that are affecting Wisconsin families. Each year, we select a theme, and host a morning of health education with exhibits, breakfast, and a moderated panel discussion. The 2017 Dialogue focused on breast cancer, specifically the “Breakthroughs in Breast Cancer,” to offer our 100+ attendees a unique look at breast cancer changes over the years and emerging trends in breast care.
Moderated by Pam Tauscher, host of MomsEveryday, our panel of experts addressed prevention, genetics, screening, and technology related to breast cancer:
Phyllis Holder, MSN, RN, Sisters 4 Cure, Inc. – “The Impact of Lifestyle Choice on Breast Cancer Risk”
Joanne Becker, MS, UW Carbone Cancer Center – “Genetic Counseling and Testing in Breast Cancer”
Mai Elezaby, MD, UW School of Medicine & Public Health – “Mammogram Mania: What to believe?”
Carla Pugh, MD, PhD, UW School of Medicine & Public Health – “The Clinical Breast Exam: Can we do better?”
From the panel discussion, attendees learned how to create and live a healthy lifestyle, identify the “red flags” of hereditary breast cancer, make an informed decision about screening options, correctly perform a breast self-exam, and more. You can too! A recorded livestream of the event as well as speaker presentations are available on our website!
The learning experience was further enhanced with an exhibit fair, which was open before and after the panel discussion. We were joined by seven wonderful organizations, who together, represented services and programs for every phase of a breast cancer journey. A highlight for attendees was being able to try out two of Dr. Pughs’s breast self-exam training simulators at the 10 Newtons exhibit! Please be sure to check out the exhibitor links below for more information:
A big thank you to everyone who attended and made the Dialogue possible. We feel fortunate that for 20 years we have been able to host events like the Dialogue to help innovate, impact, and improve women’s health. We hope everyone walked away with new information and tools to help them manage their breast health.
A special thanks to the Clinical Trials Education Network (CTEN) for sponsoring the event, and to our program partner, the Wisconsin Well Woman Program. Special recognition also goes to Breast Cancer Recovery and Susan G. Komen Wisconsin; together we have been fighting breast cancer for 20 years!
