This week we took to the studio once again for another episode of The MotherPod. In recognition of Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month, we sat down and had a conversation with Nicole Fulton, an amazing woman, mother, and small business owner of Nest Interior Design, who was first diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1991.
Multiple Sclerosis is a condition in which the body’s immune system attacks and damages tissue within the central nervous system. The exact cause of MS is currently unknown, and there is also no cure at this time. Nicole describes it as an attack of your “electrical wires,” making it difficult for the different parts of your body to communicate.
We were so thankful to sit down with Nicole and learn more about her journey with this condition, and how she manages a chronic condition while managing her family’s busy schedule. Nicole was kind enough to share advice and suggestions she would have for mothers dealing with a new diagnosis of a chronic condition like MS:
“Be patient with yourself.” As women, we want to have all the answers, but it’s OK not to. Know that learning how to manage a condition such as MS is a process.
“Give yourself permission.” Nicole often deals with fatigue as a result of her MS. She has learned to give herself permission to take power naps. In order to keep up with all the things she needs to do, including being a present mom, she needs that time to re-energize. It’s OK to take time for yourself!
Remember that “what we expect from ourselves as moms is different than what our kids expect.” Your kids want you to be present. Don’t stress over a fancy meal or all the extra activities. Just be there for them.
