One of the major challenges of living with Multiple Sclerosis is that the course of the disease can be difficult to predict when new symptoms will arise, and how severe they will be. The sense of not knowing what might come next can leave a person feeling dis-empowered. While a person may not be able to prevent all MS relapses, there are specific steps that can be taken to help live well and empowered with MS.
Physical Health
Getting regular exercise, following a healthy diet and avoiding tobacco are just a few of the steps that can impact the progression of MS. Unfortunately, symptoms associated with MS (like fatigue and temperature sensitivity) can make it more difficult to get started with some of these changes.
Emotional/Psychological Health
Managing stress, engaging in meaningful activities and staying connected with friends and family are especially important to address some of the common emotional symptoms of MS, like depression.
Cognitive Health
While it may not be as visible as other symptoms of MS, the cognitive impacts of the condition can be particularly debilitating. Take steps to ensure that you remain cognitively engaged and build up additional systems to keep you organized.
