Our Current Stance on New Mammography and BSE Guidelines: As you probably know, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recently released guidelines recommending against routine screening mammography in women age 40-49 years; that women age 50-74 should have mammograms every two years rather than every year; and, in perhaps the most surprising advisory, that doctors should stop advising women to regularly examine their own breasts. On the other hand, the American Cancer Society guidelines will not change; annual mammography will continue to be recommended for women age 40 and over. Remember, guideline recommendations differ between organizations largely due to variable interpretations of the evidence. Conflicting information highlights the fact that the decision to get screening mammography or do self breast exams is complex. Any decision should take into consideration each woman's unique characteristics and values and be the result of a discussion between her and her health care provider.
